Sundanese Karawitan is a traditional music genre from the West Java region of Indonesia, known for its unique and remarkable characteristics. In the Sundanese language, Karawitan is defined as "traditional music art" that encompasses elements such as melody, rhythm, and distinctive vocal forms. Sundanese Karawitan comprises various forms such as tembang sunda, gending, and sinden. Tembang sunda is a type of Karawitan produced by a choir or soloist accompanied by traditional musical instruments such as siter, celempung, and kendang. On the other hand, gending is a type of Karawitan performed by an ensemble consisting of various traditional musical instruments, such as suling, kecapi, and gong. One of the distinctive features of Sundanese Karawitan is the selection of pentatonic scales (five notes) as the foundation of melody formation. This scale is known as pelog and slendro, which gives a distinct nuance to each song played. To learn Sundanese Karawitan, one needs knowledge of music theory, the technique of playing musical instruments, and singing or Sinden skills. Moreover, Sundanese Karawitan can also be used as a tool to learn about the history, culture, and local values contained in the music tradition of the West Java region. Therefore, knowledge of Sundanese Karawitan is crucial to be learned and preserved as one of Indonesia's cultural heritages.
